SUSPENSION BRIDGE

Suspension Bridge

OBJECTIVE

Gladiator and Contender start at opposite ends of the Suspension Bridge. On the whistle they advance towards each other armed with hammer heads with the intention of removing each other from the bridge, the Contender's objective is to get the the Gladiators platform at the opposite side of the bridge to pick up the points by removing the Gladiator or getting past them.

FACTS

Suspension Bridge was road tested in the 1993 Wembley Live shows, in which pugil sticks were used instead of the hammer heads used in the televised series.

In 1994 (Series 3), the Suspension Bridge was modified to include end barriers, mainly for the Contenders safety in Hit & Run (which used the Suspension Bridge) to stop them from running off the end of the bridge!

In 1995 (Series 4) the event was reduced in time to 30 seconds, although the music was never edited to this time frame.

There were only ever three draws on Suspension Bridge during Gladiators, with most matches lasting less than ten seconds.

Pushing with the hammer heads were allowed from 1995 (Series 4) onwards. Although this was still frowned upon.

The men never played this event in 1998 (Series 7), it became a split event this season and was played by the women once in Heat 3.

Suspension Bridge was one of the only events that had to be re-filmed due to a very heated battle between Gladiator Rebel and Contender Trudy Ballentine in 1998 (Series 7, Heat 3).

A loss in this event would be accompanied by 'Another One Bites The Dust' by Queen.

RULES

Should either competitor be knocked to their knees, they must return back to their feet within 5 seconds of forfeit the contest.

A direct hit must be landed to put down the opponent. Absolutely no pushing is allowed, this would result in disqualification.

If the Contender manages to knock the Gladiator from the bridge they must run to the Gladiators platform to secure the win.

If a competitor looses their hammer head they forfeit the event.
