Paul from the Gladiators Zone spoke exclusively to Australian Gladiators bad boy Vulcan, John Seru.
We talked about his time with the British and Australian Gladiators and how he scored a part in the James Bond movie. What did he really think of fellow bad boys Wolf and Predator? Why would he love to face Jeremy Guscott on Duel?
Q: "What was the biggest difference between UK Glads and Australian Glads? Which do you think was better and why? If there was another Ashes series which team would you be on?"
Vulcan: "The UK Glads are much older and more mature as the Aussies are much younger in comparison. The Aussie Glads are more competitive as the UK Glads are more relaxed. As for the Ashes side, I have to pick the Aussie side, if I don't Tower would never speak to me again!"
Q: "Is it true you got the part in James Bond because of Gladiators? How was your experience of being in a James Bond Movie?"
Vulcan: "The Bond people saw me being bad on the UK Glads and got me the part just like that with no audition at all. The experience was unbelievable as it was the first movie I've ever done and to share it with Pierce Brosnan (nicest bloke ever), and Dame Judie Dench (the classiest lady ever, well thats why shes a Dame!). She said that I've got the softest touch ever... so she knows her stuff! It was something never to be forgotten."
Q: "What are your best memories from your time with the Gladiators?"
Vulcan: "People I meet and people I make friends with. Also the people behind the scenes I get to know and have remained friends with who incidently have opened a few doors for me in my after Glads career."
Q: "Which Gladiators did you get on best with?"
Vulcan: "In Oz it was Tower and Commando (who I knew before Glads) and Glacier. In UK it was Cobra (funniest Elvis ever) and Diesel (who I later got him a part in James Bond). But I got a long well with all the Glads and even Hawk from US Glads."
Q: "If you could face anyone on Duel, who would it be and why?"
Vulcan:
"Jeremy Guscott because he still owes me a beer from when he came down to Australia for the British Lions Tour. We had a bet that the Wallabies would smash the Lions and they did... but Jeremy didn't pay! The ultimate penalty is to face the best Duelist in the world and fight to the death! Well not really death, I just got carried away there!
Also Wolf... I should have smashed him when I had the chance! They got us to fight each other, but I didn't want to embarrass him so we had the worst display of Duel fighting in the history of England."
Q: "Which Contender impressed you the most during your time on Gladiators?"
Vulcan: "The young Irish boxer (Colm Curran) I faced in Duel and knocked him off in 1.2 seconds. He's short but has the biggest heart in Ireland, but I beat him up like he owed me money! He took the game so seriously and was so emotional that he cried on TV. He even invited me back to his home in Ireland and I'm still kicking myself for not going. I hope he's reading this U DA MAN BRA!"
Q: "What were your feelings about some of the Events the UK show used that Australia didn't (such as Dog Fight, Pendulum, Pole-Axe etc...)?"
Vulcan: "I thought they were very good but the Pendulum scared the hell out of me as I'm scared of heights."
Q: "When you joined the UK team were you dissapointed to see that the costumes had changed and were new white versions, and less individual.. would you have liked to see a Vulcan design logo?"
Vulcan: "Uniforms didn't worry me that much but i quite liked the UK uniform, it was nice and soft."
Q: "What was the most controversial incident that ever happened to you?"
Vulcan: "Oh, it has to be when I lost Sumo Ball in my first appearance with the UK Glads, I was tying to impress them but lost my grip. I didn't really understand that game to be honest, I'm still getting head spins now thinking about it."
Q: "Who were the Best International Gladiators - male and female?"
Vulcan: "Man thats a hard question! Every Glads has got their own uniqueness. Cobra for his atheleticism, Wolf for his badness, Lightining for her gracefulness, Storm for her toughness, Saracen for his coolness, and then all of the Americans for taking 23 mins to answer a yes or no question! Oh and of course Taipan for his beautiful long hair, nice physique, unbelievable smooth running to into the arena do Hang Tough and only to see him get smashed. So I cant answer that one."
Q: "Did you really not get on with Wolf or was that just for the show?"
Vulcan: "He was OK but I'm not inviting him to dinner though."
Q: "Was there any rivalry between you and Predator when he came on in Series 2 and pulled off a couple of bad boy stunts himself (e.g. pushing a Contender into the Cheerleaders during Powerball)?"
Vulcan: "No not really, Pred was trying get something going by trying to bad but it didn't really work for him. It's hard when you try to have a gimmick in the show."
Q: "You played Pyramid and Powerball as well as the combat Events, did you like them as much as Duel, Suspension Bridge...etc?"
Vulcan: "Oh yeah! Those events are team events and its good to go out there as team and work as a team."
Q: "How did it feel to be the ONLY Australian Glad to knock off a Contender in Australian Joust?"
Vulcan: "That didn't occur to me till now. I didn't know that. The challenger I beat is the luckiest guy in the world though because he ended up marrying Delta. His name is James and he's nice guy."
Q: "Do you have a final message for your fans? What are you doing now?"
Vulcan:
"Right now I'm back in Oz and still running my Fitness Equipment and Gym business as well as my Wrestling School. I'm doing movies still and just missed out in a part in Superman but I'm still trying. I am in negotiation with Fox Australia for a new TV show. I'll be back in US for Wrestling and the best news of all is that I've become a Christian.
Message for my fans, thanks for the great memories and keep up the strength in believing in whatever you may conquer in your lives.
P.S. I've been hearing about Glads returning to Oz TV so stay tuned... God Bless you all.."
